What is Tweed ?

Tweed is most recoginised for its scotish hertiage which emerged in the 18th century out of a need and want for a material that would make hard weating and a well insulated suit and outerwear. Woven sturdily from coarse virgin wool in dusky, earthy colours, usually worn by farmers. Tweed can make a tough and tumble fabric. Tweed also became popular among the 19th-century Victorian middle classes who associated it with the leisurely pursuits of the aristocracy.  It was worn for virtually every sporting and adventure endeavor including golf, cycling, tennis, motoring, and mountain climbing.

There a typically 4 types of tweed which is mostly seen on the market today, plain tweed, herringbone, houndstooth and overcheck tweed. 


Come back into fashion ? 

Tweed has been known to fall into the wardrobes of farmers and landed gentry, protraying a ruggedly masculine yet classy and charming appearance that has seemed to find its way into the fashion industry through the years. Tweed is now a common sight in designer collections and on the catwalks of London, Paris and Milan.
